At a good restaurant, every single bottle on the wine list should be good. I see no reason not to order the least expensive. And if it's rot gut, what's it doing on the menu?

My favorite uncle had that cartoon framed above his bar. It was the only thing I wanted from his home when he died. Someone else had taken it. Remembering it today and some of my first experiences with wines, all at his New York home. MP

i really liked that article a LOT

most notably because it mentions sebastiani....one of my favorite 'cheap' wines...

A Toss-Up

My friend Neil, a wine fancier although not on the order of Irwin, once gave me a blind taste test to disprove my philistine assertion that my bottle of Sebastiani -- which makes make some pretty good stuff -- likely was every bit as good as his loftily priced Grand Cru. I drank some of both and frankly thought it was a toss-up.


it really is amazing how the *perception* of expensiveness affects one's ability to distinguish flavor and taste...

i recently posted a link to penn and teller's very amusing analysis of 'fancy bottled' water (from a hose) on consumers when presented by a water "sommelier" in a fancy restaurant...

and i loved aussie mollydooker (screwtop under $20) well before it got a 90plus rating by robert parker
