Sounds a bit like my house. I ran the satellite TV wiring through the walls (wall fishing) myself, and the installer said I saved $150 by doing so. My wife overheard that and immediately asked if she could spend the $150.

Actually, my wife is pretty good about not overspending. Like the woman in your example, she has certain "dumb" things she spends money on, but for the most part we don't spend like most Americans. I mean, we made some cash on our house sale and I haven't bought a Aston Martin ... yet. <G>

Oh, and like your example, my wife reluctantly agreed to rent a house for a year. We moved in last week and she is ALREADY planning for when she is going out on realtor caravans to find our new place!
