I think we have a public health nightmare with junk food but one that is not nearly as obvious to the American public as is the tobacco issue.

I think a lot of the problem is relativity. There is thinking that advocating, say, Raisin Bran as a health food is preferable than telling people to quit eating crap because people won't quit eating crap and Raisin Bran is better than a donut. And there's also a need for simple messages for the simple or inattentive. It's a struggle between those focusing on the doable as opposed to the perfectionists. Both mean well, I think. Unfortunately the confusing messages of the "doables" obviate greater improvements. And companies get profits from producing health-labeled near junk because that's what the customer wants. The customer wants to eat junk and feel good about it.

jrhana,

A lot of different groups had to join forces to fight the tobacco companies and smoking. (And this fight still has to continue as I still see a lot of smoking including among teens).

Similarly I believe a lot of different groups with distinct philosophies need to unite and fight the fast food companies and the processed food producers. I think we have a public health nightmare with junk food but one that is not nearly as obvious to the American public as is the tobacco issue.

Educating the public is key and if all of these groups devote all of their time and energies into fighting among themselves, this basic and crucial message will be completely lost. Again:

Smoking vs. not smoking is much easier to define that cran eating vs. non-crap.
