BNP Paribas Net Falls 34% on Writedowns, Loan Losses

Aug. 6 (Bloomberg) -- BNP Paribas SA, France's largest bank, said second-quarter profit fell 34 percent as it wrote down debt backed by bond insurers and increased risky-loans provisions.

Net income dropped to 1.51 billion euros from 2.28 billion euros a year earlier, the Paris-based bank said in an e-mailed statement today. The earnings compare with the 1.52 billion-euro median estimate of 13 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg.

BNP Paribas, led by Chief Executive Officer Baudouin Prot, had 542 million euros of writedowns and risk provisions linked to bonds covered by insurance, leading to a fourth straight slump in profit at the securities unit. The bank's writedowns related to the subprime crisis have so far been smaller than those of Societe Generale SA, its largest French rival, and dwarfed by UBS AG's.

OT: Sweet car (I love the 996), but I like a hardtop I can take to the track occasionally. (minus the kids, of course!).

And besides, cabs are heavy! (LOL! With that much power, I'm sure it scoots along just fine).

I make do with 240/236 hp/torque, my car was made before the horsepower wars started, and while BMW North America was convinced that the 330 hp Euro engine would not sell well here, as it would add about $10K to the price. So the USA got a larger-displacement version of the 328i motor (single VANOS), rather than the very trick double VANOS Euro motor with individual throttle bodies. Handles very well though.

How on earth do you own a car like that and keep your license?

I came very close to buying a Porche 911 Turbo back in the late 80's, but I figured I'd drive it for 2-months, have my license yanked, and maybe even end up in jail.

I was once pulled over on the freeway for going 15 in a Ford Econoline van.

Well, the speedo arrow was pointed at 15MPH on the dial, but only because it had circled the gauge, moving past 85, then past zero and up to 15.

I figure it was going about 110 much of the time, but he had my only doing 97 when he got me. The cop was ticked. He said he chased me for 13-1/2 miles.

In those days the highway limit was double nickels.

The only reason I got a ticket that day was because it was foggy and someone had left the windshield washer solvent out while there was salt spraying all over the windshield while I was driving. I had to get to an airport a couple hundred miles away, and I was cutting it very close.

I've always used my eyes to spot cops on the road, and I've only had a couple tickets on the freeway as a result (the other was when I was up 40 hours straight and had to drive a couple hundred miles).
