In addition there will be no easy access to N. Iraq and no oversight over Iran trough Georgia and Azerbaijan - as Turkey is not exactly cooperative in those matters due to their war with the Kurds in S. East Turkey.

There is very high strategic value to install intelligence gathering military installation in the mountains in Georgia / Azerbaijan for surveillance of Southern Russia and Iran / Iraq regions and this is an issue that Russia also adamantly opposes. (mountain ridges are up to 2,900 meters high there (over 8500 feet) nice for listening devices and radars of all kinds and less than 500 to 600 miles form Bagdad and Teheran

Hope it helps

It sounds to me as if the American interest is to broker an Anschluss of the two disputed ethic Russian areas of Georgia to eliminate plausible Russian claims in the remaining portions of the repressive little republic of Georgia.

The Russians would have been wise to do the same with their troublesome Muslim regions.

Putin has his work cut out for him with more than enough internal problems to occupy himself. I think in time he will be faced with the reality of this situation.

I think the sooner we dispose of the entanglement of Iraq the better off we are. Putting the fortune we are spending in Iraq into other than Middle East oil energy sources solves a multitude of problems. It's simply a matter of desire.

Listening posts in Georgia / Azerbaijan could have modest cost advantages but little in the way of strategic value that cannot be obtained in other ways.
