Yes - but at that time, they were states, not nations. A state was a military leadership that set up rules, but I don't believe that the Vikings taxed ordinary farmers, or even made rules for them. It seems that they earned their money using long-distance trade, and spent the money by buying food locally. It seems to me, that there is still some pre-Rus culture present in Ukraine.

But I certainly understand the liquor argument - to me, the christianization of the Viking areas seems to look as a way to improve trade, and why trade more if that would mean that you cannot get what you want?

Suffice to say Europe's fringes have been crumbling. The close the ensuing melee of crumbling Europe had; was when I was in Klagenfurt Austria (1991) for their annual carnival and the planes from Slovenia were visible flying just about the border.

Europeans know into what kind of situation it can develop. Thus the encompassing of neighbouring countries that both, buys social peace, and serves as captive export markets.

Imagine what have been of Germany without the 'purchase' of Eastern Germany captive market!!! Nearby crumbling went smooth, Czech = Slovakia split for instance.

As it goes more Eastern, it gets too close to Soviet Union’s center and things get tougher as internal splits can't be smoothed out and degenerate in conflicts.
Now the crumbling is far and near the Soviet center of power and will play on by script.

Which leaves Turkey: Europe knows that trying to gobble Turkey wouldn't be just go buy some captive market and let the fireworks fly.
