This possibility has me wondering. Suppose it is found at the eleventh hour that one or the other candidate is NOT eligible for the office through lack of the requisite citizenship.

This is the same question as asking what would happen if a Presidential candidate died or had to drop out for some other reason (such as a health crisis) between the nomination and the election. As far as I can recall, it's never happened in the last century. I don't know if either party has rules. Presumably, the VP candidate would take over.

Second question: Why would a party let it go so far without some kind of proof?

These are the Democrats, remember? They've been taken over by Moveon.org. Proof is for Republicans.
