i favored G8 retaliation, olympics. Hell i would send condie to the gates of that city in georgia that russia now controls snd tell the russians to get out. But signing that missile defense system in poland today is a stick in the eye and it confirms (to them) the russian paranoia about encirclement. When JFK got Krushchev to remove missiles from Cuba, he also promised to remove our nuke tipped jupiters from Turkey. I would suggest we build abm in russia proper in conjunction with them. The russians greatest problem with us is our arrogance in conducting fp in their neighborhood without treating them as equals or at least as the great regional power they are. This is why bush and putin are fast friends---they think in the same way.

I scoffed this week when some on this thread said, "There is nothing Bush can do; his hands are tied". Of course there are things that can be done.

If you were scoffing, why didn't you respond to the posts that questioned what the US could do? In fact, you didn't know how the US could respond to Russia's bold and aggressive move, and this business about putting missles in Poland is a desperate attempt by Bush not to look stupid. You guys have fukked up one more time........and you look very much like the jerks you really are.

Oh and let's meet in Iraq's McDonald's to talk about it.

Did you ever wonder why Arkansas is so poor?

"This is how foreign policy is done."

Maybe in a game. A large factor in diplomacy is knowing when you have a winning hand, when you have a busted flush. We have a busted flush in that region.

The question is, is it worth bluffing? The stakes are pretty high. It isn't likely we can raise the stakes high enough that Russia drops out. In fact, they are likely to raise the stakes a lot higher than we can.
