That might have worked. However, it was way too much fun for many to kick Russia while it was down, not having learned the lesson of post-WWI. Now, Putin is not Hitler. But if Russia hadn't of gotten rich suddenly, they would have gotten one eventually.

And personally, I am not sure giving Russia wads of cash makes the situation any better in the long run.

Russia needed to be in it with the first batch of former Warsaw pacters. Then maybe they wouldnt feel so surrounded and threatened by it.

Because the neos believe that having enemies, real or otherwise, all over the world makes it easier to sell a strong military at home?
