Dan3,

'Russia's recent reversion to cold war behavior is almost certainly affecting currency markets.'

Russia's reversion to cold war behavior is partially in self defense. Everything that Bush and Cheney have done in the past 7 1/2 years has been to try to drive a wedge between Russia and it's former Soviet states such as Ukraine and Georgia. The problem that they have encountered now is that Putin is smarter than Bush and Cheney put together. He effectively controls (Or can control) all of the energy in the Middle East. Here is a good article if you haven't seen it.

Georgia was spanked and will be forced back into line and there really isn't anything the United States can do about it except to jawbone. Don't get me wrong, I don't think Putin is a saint. Far from it. But I do believe he is a hell of a lot more clever than our chief executives.

Cheers,

Steve

That is another possibility, probably down on the list, but possible.
