I think there is a danger to McCain if he uses a story of such a deeply personal nature. People are naturally curious about why a very similar story was previously expressed by Solzynitzen <sp> . Why did McCain never talk about this for 35 years? Too personal?

He has opened the door now and I think some further quesitions will be asked. I don't think it helps him to have a focus on this....it can't be proven either way, but it can cast a shadow on his credibility with some people.

McCain has a TV ad out now on this very event...he is the one claiming its absolute authenticiy. He has the most to lose or gain from it.

Re: "it's clearly obvious that hillary lied about dodging sniper fire,"

Right.

Because their were *multiple* witnesses, and *actual video* of the events! :-)

But, as far as the 'cross in the dirt' story goes... seems that the only *possible* witnesses would be McCain and that unknown North Vietnamese prison camp guard. Sure wasn't any VIDEO or Press there to report on events! <g>

So, it seems utterly impossible to know either way, and folks will just have to take or leave the story based on... well... whether they believe the word of this particular politican or not.

But, the blogger was only raising ONE perfectly valid question to ask, that would occur normally in the minds of most folks when listening to a recounting of an unverifiable, though inspirational, personal story:

If this reputed event was so deeply moving and all to you, why is it that you never mentioned it to anyone for 30-odd years --- until you were running for President and had a problem rallying white evangelical voters?

As Andrew Sullivan asked:

"...why did you not mention this transcendent story in 1973?"

"Why, in discussing three Christmases in captivity in Vietnam, was this story - far more powerful than any of the other anecdotes - omitted?"

"How was it possible for the gun guard of May 1969 to be present at Christmas that year when McCain had been transferred to another camp?"

None of this actually DISPROVES the story, of course!

(It's just appropriately normal skepticism when dealing with politicians....)
