John Edwards was "reaching above his station" back in 2004. Of course, since he's white, that's not a racist comment ... That's because nobody said it. They might have said he came from a humble background, but when you say "his station" it implies where he permanently belongs. It you were applying for a job and the interviewer told you it was "above your station in life", what would you think? Honestly.
