I guess I don't. The top 110 hurdlers cannot hope to win a 100 meter dash against the top sprinters- that's why they do the hurdles. But you see all the time the swimmers swimming tight races with each other in the butterfly and then freestyle. I'm sure one of those sports physiologist/biomechanic research folk could explain it all better.
