I too would hedge by waiting until the kinks work their way through, ideally until battery technology does not prove a disappointment and cost burden. There are plenty of efficient engines out there. What would help the most right now (in terms of cost/benefit) imo is using smaller engines and lighter alloys. The engines have become reliable and more efficient, but they've just pandered to the survivalist/beast instinct in the US with a massive overuse of HP.

In spite of the constant messages targeting man's desire to extend is johnson through massive horsepower, the primary appeal of the auto is complete independence in transportation timing and availability. Being able to get around and also being able to eat trumped overcompensating ego needs before, and it will again this time. Question is, which company will fill that greater need (and want) for mobility versus the ego-gratifying lust for power at the expense of not being able to afford to use it?

Well, GM needs to hit a home run with the Volt. Any technical problems and they can strike out.

I'll wait because the first ones will be selling at a premium...you know the big dealer prep fee. G

I have had 5 Saturns in the last 15 years. I wreaked one. All have been good cars. The third gave me 235,000 miles.

The 4th and 5th are in the garage... have never required maintenance other than oil changes.

The third needed a clutch at 80k (probably my driving), a fuel body replacement at 130k, a/c clutch replacement at 98k (under extended warranty) and thats about it.

Sorry you had bad luck.

I cannot speak for the Mexican or Lordstown ones, as mine were all made in Spring Hill.

My last mileage check on the 04 Ion was 37.9 mpg. Almost in Prius territory. Usually gets around 35.
