I don't think there's any point to declaring a certain class of babies "non-viable" except to justify writing them off.

>> Cause to me, his anecdote is proof enough that such a baby is indeed viable.

The survival of my niece born at 2 lbs was very unusual at the time.

But today, it is not at all rare for a baby born at 2 lbs or 2.5 lbs to survive and be healthy. Modern neonatal ICUs are equipped to deal with these situations and do a pretty good job of it.

My point was that (a) these babies CAN be viable at very early ages, and (b) the barbaric practice of aborting babies late in the pregnancy needs to be constantly re-examined and pressure should be applied toward eliminating the practice.

I'm not among those who believe that abortions early on are tantamount to murder. Early on, they are human tissue but do not, IMO, constitute a human being. But at some point the fetus transitions from tissue to a being. It is somewhat arbitrary to claim that happens at 9 months, versus 12 months, versus 6 months.

My view is that the time during which abortion should be an option is quite short -- a few weeks. Anyone who cannot make their decision in that time frame just has to deal with it like millions of pregnant teens and women have done for thousands of years. Many deeply religious individuals could never agree to this kind of thing, but for me, there is a pragmatic aspect.

"But you don't believe in killing said babies."

No I don't.

"Do you have a point, or are you trying to catch David in a "gotcha"?"

Yes, I have a point. The point is using an anecdote like this to call for narrowing the window for abortions is wrong.

"Cause to me, his anecdote is proof enough that such a baby is indeed viable."

That would be because you don't know the definition of "viable".

Look it up.
