sm,

point taken. it looks like only 12% of our oil is purchased from the middle east. i had no idea it was that low. now i do.

my guess is he said it because it sounds cool and makes him sound like an innovator president. it also sounds like energy prices will drop without actually saying it. that theme will surely help his election ambitions.

eliminating that 12% should be easy, so obama is in a good position to shut me up and prove me wrong and i'll be the first to eat my shoe if he does.

i still don't think he'll do it and i wouldn't be surprised to see:

1. 12% increasing to some higher percentage over the next 4-8 years obama is in office.
2. americans not caring enough to hold obama accountable for his promises.

now, #1 might not be that big a deal, however, #2 leads to guys like bush getting re-elected.

Why Palin's knocked up daughter is important:

1. Conservatives like Palin and McCain ridiculously believe that abstinence is the answer to unwanted teenage pregnancies. That is a policy they regularly try to foist upon those of us who are much wiser. The nut jobs constantly fight against their kids being taught birth control in schools. The failure of this concept is perfectly illustrated by this girl getting pregnant. Had she been on the pill, she would still finish high school with her class. Had they used condoms, perhaps. I've used a lot of condoms and they don't break often, but too often for any kind of guarantee about pregnancy and stds. And, it doesn't seem to matter if they are ribbed or reservoir or magnum or any of that other crap. Like most conservative policies, this one is obviously flawed and, sadly, the Palin girl is now the poster child of this silliness.

2. Think of what Hate Radio and Fox Noise and the other yappers on the right would say if this were the kid of a Democratic candidate. "These people don't share our whoresome, er, wholesome family values." If it were a black candidate, it would be even worse. If it were a real woman candidate (not a female Quisling, like Palin), "that's what happens when liberals put politics above their families."

So, I don't believe in pounding the kid. But the right wingers have to be reminded of their many failed policies and their hypocrisy.
