>>Why was he wasting his time on a relative nobody, trying to beat an incumbent governor (and former three term senator) in the Republican primary?<<

Huh? Murkowski was the most unpopular governor in the USA. The handwriting was on the wall.

>>Palin slaughtered the incumbent in the primary--posting a 30 point margin of victory<<

She got 51% in a 3-way race with one young woman against two older guys. With Murkowski out, the race would been much tighter.

>>and went on to win the general (over a former Democratic governor) without seeming to break a sweat<<

Another 3-way race. She took 48%.

>>she still racks up approval ratings of 80 per cent or better<<

Old news. More like 65% recently (pre-nomination). Still good, but the ethics scandal has tarnished her image.

The bottom line: Frank Murkowski made Sarah Palin governor of Alaska. The dynamics at the national level are quite different.

Sooner or later, the Obama camp will realize that the beauty pageant queen is an enormously talented populist in a year that is ripe for populism. For their own sake, it had better be sooner.

For all our sakes, let's hope their bubble isn't pierced until too late.
