"Is the McCain campaign starting to unraveling? "

Probably not. It does appear, however, that the McCain campaign isn't exactly quick on their feet.

They have handled this poorly from the start. Meg's response was reasonable, but the campaign hadn't gotten their narrative together and briefed Meg before her interview. I am guessing the interview has been scheduled for a while, but the campaign is trying to figure out what to do.

Here is the best possible spin that can be put on it. The McCain campaign claims she briefed them on the pregnancy on Weds. a week ago. I am thinking that didn't happen. I think that after the vetting team got there Thursday, someone eventually realized that the rumors about Trig's paternity might get some traction. After they started digging into it, all the weirdness convinced them that the rumor could be dangerous. So, over the weekend, they finally pinned Sarah on the issue and she told them at least some things.

And they went into panic mode. The press release on Monday was not planned well at all. And they have been trying to come to grips with the situation ever since.

And they are not doing a very good job. This one shows that they still aren't on top of their game. They are just coming up with a response and haven't been able to propagate it across their staffers.

Bottom line. It has taken them at least 1/2 a week to come up with some type of response. It may have been over a week. Certainly they are not naive enough to believe that the PR was going to do the job. So they had to be aware that there was going to be some impact on the media. From the way they are acting, I suspect it isn't quite as much as they anticipated, because, if anything, they seem to be trying to tamp out some fires that don't exist.

They have shown some signs before that they aren't all that flexible. This pretty much proves it.
