If the supreme court starts to slide further right, we might very well end up with ID, or even creationism in school. Many of those issues are decided in court. Don't forget that. I have zero doubt that a McCain court, if it looks like Alito and Scalia and Thomas, would be willing to allow ID and creationism.

So the question remains why factor it into the decision? Because what an unfettered leader would do tells you a lot about their philosophy, character, etc. Suppose McCain is elected and the Dems unusually lose their Congressional control in 2010. McCain then has a free rein to pass what he wants (mostly), appoint who he likes, etc. In my critical risk assessment - which is very much operative, thank you very much - there is always a chance that what sounds like blather today could become reality tomorrow. But since I am not undecided anyway, your more calibrated levels of risk assessment are less important for me. Our perspective on this race is so different that our approaches are really apples and oranges.

I understand voting for the candidate with whom one most identifies, with whom one feels comfortable. I actually started slipping off the fence on Obama's side for that very reason. He and Biden are my kind of people, after all. McCain is too weird and Palin might as well be from Mars for all I can identify with her. But I can acknowledge that decision process for what it is and it sure ain't critical thinking. On the point of how to vote, a couple of thoughts. One never knows just what issues will face a new president and his/her administration. It makes sense to consider not simply their positions and the likelihood they can do something to enact them but what those positions and they way they campaign tells you something about their governing style. And, second, any vote for McCain which depends upon continuing control of the congress by Dems, is short sighted. The Dems could easily lose the majority or lose control. Third, one does have to worry about McCain's age, cancer history, et al so the worry about the vp is greater in his case. And both the process of deciding and the selection speaks very badly.
