Seems to me you are in the land of the "Maybe".

Maybe Obama would be worse, but looking at the debt of the Bush administration it's hard to argue that- especially if you compare it to the Clinton administration. You may really believe Obama would be more profligate- but it's all maybe, especially when you listen to what McCain says about international adventures.

Trying to cloak your maybe in talk about short term comfort vs "patriotism" is just obfuscation. IMO You're trying to put an emotional spin on your maybe. I guess it's politically saavy, but it doesn't bring any logic to the party.

As for disabusing me of this, the only way would be to persuade me that it's OK to live in the selfish now or that Obama etc won't likely create topsy.

Or that, given the decision framework you are using, which I confess to not understanding very well, you need to tote up the negatives of a McCain presidency as well: an intemperate president, eager to use the military before the diplomatic; a president who doesn't act on a careful examination of the consequences of policies (the Palin choice is the clearest illustration); no intent to address the increasing inequality in American society with adverse consequences for all; an empowering of the most retrograde elements (anti-science, anti-others, anti government, and increasingly xenophobic (witness the recent Rep convention)).

Given these relative negatives, I don't see how you are having any difficulties choosing.
