But he knows, after all the slanted reporting last week, that he will be crucified if he spends his time playing "Gotcha." Hugh Hewitt had a interesting excercise with an audience that he reviewed on his radio show. He asked his audience to clap if they ever had 1. an out of wedlock pregnancy happen in their family 2. a special needs child in their family 3. attended a child's sporting event in the last 10 years 4. to work two jobs to cover the bills 5. to piece together their college degree at several colleges 6. attended church regularly 7. been married for more 20 years to one spouse etc. Lots of people say 'yes' to each question. Hugh pointed out that these aren't ideological questions, they are just lifestyle questions. People can relate to Sarah Palin. Hugh also noted that the first response of the media to Palin was for the "guys with lead pipes" - Matthews and Olbermann, to try to destroy her, and that the MSM is deriding her as a rube and a hick. And Americans are hearing this - seeing every arched eyebrow and scornful comment - and they are angry about it. I think Hugh has a good point. Hugh also thinks that Team Obama is panicked. I wouldn't be surprised; they were obviously caught totally on the hop by this choice, as was the MSM. The reaction has really been schizophrenic. On the one hand, the MSM reporters were genuinely stunned - Howard Fineman said none of the 'professional Republicans' had predicted or ever shortlisted her (he obviously doesn't talk to Bill Kristol, who not only wanted her but predicted her selection), and reacted as if McCain had plucked an unknown housewife from Anchorage for VP. They wondered out loud if McCain was desperate or crazy and predicted that she might be dropped from the ticket. On the other hand, everybody connected with the Republican base was jumping for joy - 'Yes! Yes! Yes! Thank you, Johnny Mac! You listened to us!' Many Republicans were surprised, but all of them had heard of Sarah Palin & Bobby Jindal as the stars of the rising generation. Those who were thought McCain should campaign on experience worried that McCain had undercut his own argument. But nobody was stunned. Nobody thought McCain was crazy. Nobody thought she would be dropped from the ticket. It is whiplash-inducing. The two worlds never meet. p.s. CNN played a Holy Roller segment on Sarah Palin today, right on schedule. I switched on Olbermann for a minute and caught him mocking her religion too. She's going to get more negative coverage for being Assemblies of God than Obama ever got for TUCC & "God damn America", at least from the MSM (Obama really only got negative coverage when Rev. Wright went on his interview & speech blitz and could no longer be ignored).
