The remark has been used a number of times by Democrats to describe aspects of McCain's campaign. Here is one example.

I think that Former Massachusetts Governor Jane Swift got it exactly right, when she interpreted Obama’s remarks to mean that he called Palin a “pig” and McCain an “old fish.”

When you can't argue the facts in a political campaign, you ridicule the opponent.

I've heard the "lipstick on a pig" expression all my life. It has nothing to do with Sarah Palin.

But you're going to believe the worst about Obama no matter what, just as you believed the whole of that ridiculous Scott Ott piece.
