Am I supposed to see things through the eyes of a murderer before I can accuse them of committing a murder? Stop your relativistic mumbo-jumbo.. we undestand what Russia is doing. They want to control the oil supplies and pipelines from the Caspian so they can keep Europe on a tight leash. It has NOTHING to do with their national security because everyone knows that Russia is not threatened by small countries like Georgia, nor do they have anything to fear from a defensive anti-missile system (which we OFFERED TO SHARE WITH MOSCOW SEVERAL YEARS AGO) to defend against missiles fired by rogue states. I mean listen up.. The reason that Georgia so desperately wanted to retain S. Ossetia and Abkhazia is because the Caucasus form a natural defensive barrier. There were only 3 means by which the Russians could effectively enter Georgian territory and all 3 were easily defended prior to Russian the presence of "peacekeepers". And the same can be said for any incursion by Georgia against Russia. It just couldn't be feasibly done across that mountain range. But now it can.. because the Russians have breached it and have control over the tunnels and passes from their territory to Georgia. And democracy, or at least sovereignty, IS A MAJOR ISSUE, no matter how you try and ignore it. Every state has the right to form it's own alliances within the boudaries of international laws. It has the right to develop economic agreements as well, including the building of pipelines that circumvent the control of an domineering and imperialistic power. One of our next moves over the long term should be to eliminate our oil dependence, so that we don't have to play any game that involves oil politics or strategy. No sh*t sherlock!! I suppose you think you can just snap your fingers and make it happen overnight, right?? And then we just abandon the Georgians to their fate because they are no longer in our national interest? And btw, the majority of that oil coming through Georgia goes to Europe, not the US. But because the US is a European Ally, and we recognize the importance of making sure Europe has the energy it requires (so they're aren't competing with our sources), it becomes a vital interest of ours. How will you respond next, when China opts to invade Vietnam so they can claim the rights to the Spratly Islands (and the oil that lies there)?? Face it MM, there are other countries that are FAR MORE AGGRESSIVE than the US about asserting their foreign and energy policies to the detriment of others. And many of the victims of such intimidation rely upon our country to stand by their side and support their sovereign security. And we both can do a little business on the side, that's all the better. That's never going to change, unless you decide to abandon those countries to their fates at the hands of depots and tyrants on their borders. Hawk
