My oldest daughter married into one of those families with the very tangled genealogy like you described. Ashton, of the Marvin J. Ashton group, is her husband's lineage. My own has no polygamy in it.

Did you know the Church has done some wonderful work from their genealogy records in helping map the genetic relationships of cancers, particularly breast cancer? My daughter is being treated at the Huntsman Cancer Institute in SLC, where much of this work goes on. Her own cancer will now be in that database and will mark the first, as far as we know, in her maternal lineage.

It's been many years since I read up on this but even back then significant numbers of LDS women were learning they had the genetic marker and started getting checked regularly and many were catching their own breast cancers at very early stages.

As for the Book of Mormon, I think many in the Church have some quiet skepticism. I've gone back and forth in my own mind about the whole Joseph Smith story and recording of it and I've read all the claims of fraud, etc. I just keep coming back to the fact that he and all those who translated it, except one, were hunted down and killed for it. Rather than denounce, they each accepted their fate. Plus no one made any money of it, lol.

For some reason, as I've gotten older, the fact that many have died for their beliefs rather than denounce has become extremely meaningful and faith affirming to me.
