"US has been through similar situations before" But, in those previous situations we had an expanding manufacturing base (except early 80's) and we were essentially energy independent (except early 80's). Even during the early 80's we still had the world's Largest Economy by far and our debt was quite manageable (about 1 Trillion). Today the European Union has surpassed us as an economy and the Chinese are gaining on us fast. Our debt has grown tremendously to the point that we spend as much on "interest" on our debt as we spend on our Defense.
