You do realize the way you write about your "foreign" friends, the multi-national you work at (Would you like fries with that?) and the "gay" guy you saw on T.V. are obvious indicators of your background, right?

No, but human societies have always recognized marriage between men and women. Same sex marriage otoh is a radical social change for any society. There have been societies where same sex marriages were very acceptable. In addition in this country, marriage in general was not a big thing until the 20th century. In fact the tax laws were changed around the turn of the century to encourage marriage because it believed too many single men were contributing to crime problems in the country.
