dunno

I'm not interested in having a beer with anyone, since I don't drink much. But i would like a president who I think is elite enough to understand the issues, and who can impress foreign leaders with his intellect and the force of his arguments.

Might go some way to mitigate international hostility and promote peace, and solve problems. Not that we don't have a very nice foreign service, but some intelligent leadership at the top wouldn't go amiss with the rest of the world.

When did we get this mantra that we need presidents we can have a beer with or enjoy having lunch with?

It was Rove's "genius." Part of his "Gore is boring, you wouldn't want to have a beer with him," and "Do you really want to have this bore in your living room every night?"

I think that it started with Andrew Jackson.
