IMO anyway-lol. Two comments: 1) I believe Ross Perot Helped Clinton in one of those races. 2) You are so correct about the readjusting American economic power. It is going to happne big time for two reasons: one is the second Industrial revolution and two the neo cons and evangelicals have done everything wrong, economically, politically and socially! 1) the neo cons and evangelical's ahve made it impossible for thoughtful people to enact the corrrect policies e.g. a gas tax of .50 to a $1 15 years ago woudl ahve weened us off of gas guzzlers and if we had forced the auto makers to buidl fuel efficient cars. 2) The US has 4/5% of the world's population, but uses 25% fo the worlds resoures and casues 25% fo the pollution. We are now seeing the second industrial revolution whereby the world is rebalanceing itself economically. What I worry about is how the Americans will react to having to live like most of the rest of the world i.e. without their hummers and super trucks! I am hoping we do not resort to hedgemony and jingoism!! tejek: "If I remember correctly, B. Clinton barely won both of his presidential elections. It wasn't like he got a landslide. The first time he won was because the economy was ailing and the second time because the economy was improving. If you look at this country's history since WW II, getting elected president as a Dem has not been an easy fit. And that's because the US tends to be center right politically. Add to that Obama's race, and this election from the getgo has always been an uphill battle for him. There is another thing to consider......there is a very good possibility that we are witnessing the decline of the American civilization. Civilizations are not static.....they are organic. They rise up and grow, plateau and then eventually decline. The meism we have talked about on this thread.....the preoccupation with making money.....the unwillingness to pay for things that benefit the country as a whole........the unwise decisions American leaders are making overseas......an unwillingness to adequately address serious problems like energy.......the wholesale raid on the US Treasury.......these are all symptomatic of a civilization in trouble; one that has seen its best years. At the same time, they could be symptomatic of a civilization on the eve of great change. Time will tell which way we are going. What I do know know is that Obama is the best presidential candidate in my lifetime. In fact, he is head and shoulders above anyone in the last 20 years including Bill Clinton. I also know he has run an incredibly well organized campaign that has ebbed and flowed with all the cross currents it has encountered. He is thoughtful, intelligent, measured and gracious. He can be tough when he needs to be. People have put so many demands on him to prove himself.....many more than put on McCain......and he has come through with flying colors. There are over 50 days left to this election. Americans are just now starting to pay attention. Anything can happen between now and 5 November. Winning has never been a slamdunk.......we all need to accept that fact and then we all need to work hard to make winning the reality. All in my opinion.
