the R's potential for going into Clinton-hatred mode?

I wonder about that as well. Perhaps I'm not looking in the right places, but I dont sense nearly that level of hatred for Obama.

But do you have any thoughts about the prognostication in the piece I posted and that you clipped--the R's potential for going into Clinton-hatred mode?

I genuinely have no idea. I was surprised by their sense of entitlement that led to the Clinton hatred through the 90s. So I'm not exactly the one to know.

My own guess, fwiw, is that the further right of the party, the part that got energized by the Palin pick, will go through the roof should McCain now lose. Before the Palin pick I think they could have cared less. But now I would not be surprised to hear a great deal about patriotism, etc., at every point.

The rest of the party seemed fairly sanguine about losing with McCain prior to the Palin pick. I can't read them yet but you do get these oddly contorted comments from them which suggest they would not be upset. Whether they would be able to keep the more rabid sectors in hand, I don't know.

And, the big kicker, it all may depend on just how visceral the campaign becomes from here on out. McCain's decision to go deep in the dirt will, inevitably, provoke a similar response from several places on the Dem side. Tempers could get really strained by election date.

If Obama loses and the loss looks to be a result of foul play of some sort--more of the recent spate of terrible ads, or worse yet to come, and/or voter suppression, it's likely that passing legislation may be the least of the worries.

Sorry I don't have a clear answer available. But I do think the McCain decision to go negative pushed us into very dangerous waters.
