I handled the retirement funds at our company from 2000-2007, and we averaged about 10% per year during that period while never losing money in a single year.

Our options in our plans were severely limited the first several years, so during almost the entire period from mid-Jan. 2001 through June 2003 we were in money market funds. We were in the market for about 3-months during those 2-1/2 years. Our all in equity buy was at SPX 960 in June 2003, and it was cycled a few times into fall 2007.
