Well, I don't have all the answers, but I've always liked the idea of letting us invest our social security taxes in a 401K like vehicle that let's us invest in target date retirement funds. The gov't can mandate that we pay in the standard social security tax rates and that we can't take the money out until we reach retirement age, but let us invest it ourselves and tag the money to our own social security numbers.

But to get started, we'd have to recognize the debt owed to current retirees who get paid out of our taxes. So the current retirees would have to be paid out of our annual budget, which probably means raising taxes for everyone. So that is why SS is such a 3rd rail. Any real solution will involve unmentionables for both Dems and Reps.

I've concluded long ago that SS will never be fixed. Instead, we'll just keep raising the retirement age and reducing the payouts until it is worthless and just another tax on top of everything else we're taxed on.
