A systems specialist needs to sit the big boys down and explain that profits are the 'effect' of a successful business and not the 'cause'.

BB, they "big boys" know the theory. They are out to make as much money for themselves as they can, and the yearly bonus incentives tell them that the best way to do this is to manage the company for the next year. Grab profits while you can, you never know what the 5 years will bring. That becomes the "risk." Managing for 5 year risks becomes irrelevant. After all, no one makes them give back their fat bonuses when the risk catches up with them and they have lean years. In fact, not much that is bad happens at all to the vast majority of them. They get fired and golden parachutes. Then they move on to some other venture to milk. Or get sent to pasture. Others are left holding the bag and deal with their improvidence.
