Of course there are practical considerations. WTF do you think we are talking about here. Nobody is claiming we will "become 100% independent and green in 10 years?". So that's a strawman.

Show me alt energy projects that make money w/o massive subsidies and I'll be gung ho for it. But no one will have to have a positive attitude then. It will succeed on its own merits.

Geothermal, wind, concentrated solar don't get 'massive' subsidies, no more than your beloved drilling. Probably way less when you consider the non-intrinsic subsidies.

The environmental movement started almost 40 yrs ago succeeded in cleaning up our air and water ..... and has now morphed into an anti-everything movement.

There are some radicals as there are in every movement (see Neo-conservatives). But all in all the environmental movement has done much more good than harm.
