The oil companies get a percentage of our military budget

Well they get the money that the military spends on refined oil products, but that's hardly a subsidy, its payment for goods received.

So you think we can totally remake our economy in 20 years?

Commercially they essentially get an investment tax credit... which is currently up in the air on renewal.

A 30% tax credit.

The oil companies get a percentage of our military budget,

A lie. Where is the USN protecting oil companies investments in Nigeria or Indonesia or Venezuela? Those are countries where assets (and employees killed and kidnapped) have been attacked or seized.

I will say again, US oil companies have essentially no investments in Iraq.

they get low cost leases

Another lie. Leases are competitively bid.
And big bucks are paid for them.

, they get depreciation allowences

Every business does. As they should.

, they get 'other stuff'

Like a heavy tax burden. Like Senators trying to keep them from getting foreign business and demonizing them for a worldwide rise in energy prices.

. You probably don't want to count the military expense (though it is very real)

The military argument is stupid. Like saying our considerable NATO commitment exists only to protect the N Sea and other European oil and gas fields.

I'm sure that 30 years ago folks like you were thinking the environmental movement was over the top also. There are checks on the nuttier stuff.

We had a burning river in OH 30+ years ago. Environmental problems were perceived differently. A lot of cleanup has occurred, yet the fear-mongering continues.
