I think conservation driven by economic or pocket book concerns will be more fruitful and longlasting than govt command decisions.

Less fruitful, because they result in less economic activity. The last thing we want is people curbing their spending habits because of gasoline. Much better to mandate more MPG efficiency and maintain the same activity at a lower cost.

I'm not sure on residential but I'm pretty sure the only significant national subsidy for commercial is an investment tax credit... that's what they are fighting about not.

No, but they're not doing it for our oil companies.

They are doing it to maintain our supply of oil... because without it we would be totally f'ed. Worse than the worst terrorist attack you could imagine.

I believe if we used zero oil from the ME, we'd still be militarily committed there.
