think conservation driven by economic or pocket book concerns will be more fruitful and longlasting than govt command decisions.

Less fruitful, because they result in less economic activity The last thing we want is people curbing their spending habits because of gasoline.

We don't know how are conserving exactly. Some are ride sharing, eliminating unnecessary trips, combining trips. Whatever. Conservation doesn't necessarily mean lower spending on other things.

Much better to mandate more MPG efficiency and maintain the same activity at a lower cost.

There is a long history of economies that have depended on command decisions. They don't work as well as market driven economies.

No, but they're not doing it for our oil companies.

They are doing it to maintain our supply of oil... because without it we would be totally f'ed. Worse than the worst terrorist attack you could imagine.

I believe if we used zero oil from the ME, we'd still be militarily committed there.

Token at best.

You just said it doesn't matter how much we get from the ME. That undercuts your argument.
