"Most everyone else is happy"? US will not be able to invest for a decade.

Imagine if you -as a person- bail out your wife who would be loaded with lots of debts and you take all her debts and added to your own debts.

(To give you an idea of what it is this for the US US$ 10,6 trillion goes US$ 11,3 trillions -which correspons to about a 75% of US GDP)

You would be having only enough to eat, pay the bills at the end of the month for the next decade

That means you will not be able to buy a new car when yours get old, repair your house, treat your teeth, do a health check up, buy a pair of glasses.
