I'm more optimistic than you. If McCain passes a bill, and it quiets the panic, he will be seen to have done something important while Obama first dithered then followed his lead. That will change the topic from the bailout blame game to the question of who can lead in a crisis, which would be to McCain's benefit.

McCain's an old fighter pilot. Having noticed that his opponent does not react nimbly when the unexpected happens, we should not be surprised if McCain arranges for the unexpected to happen as often as he can, and then forces Obama to react.
