McCain needs something big to pick up eight points with four weeks left in the election… how he lost this many points in a week is amazing. Was it because he dropped the idea of the debate on Friday and rushed off to Washington?

I don’t think this was a significant factor.

If I had to guess, I’d say the 8 lost points consisted of 2 points from fallout related to the credit crisis and 6 points from voters’ pulling away due to doubts about Palin. JMHO, FWIW

Why? He had gained ten points two weeks before. There is 10% or 15% of the vote that is sloshing about in the middle, very lightly attached to either side.

I think the economic crisis was a gift to Obama. McCain needs to hit back hard against the false line that Republican deregulation somehow created the housing bubble, and to broadcast the fact (that if this deal goes through) McCain was leading the charge while Obama sat on the sidelines.
