Mark-to-market is being blamed by many for this disaster and they're wanting to do away with it. Which is a mistake, I think. When you're dealing with capital assets, you generally don't market to market but when you're dealing with stock-in-trade, M/M is crucial to prevent the hiding of losses. Those advocating doing away with it are simply saying, "Oh, even if you have a realized loss we don't want you recognize it because it may make the market go south." In effect, let's hide the problem from investors like we used to do. Bad idea.
