Ephud:

Shanghai does run HT3.1. Its the same chip as Deneb. Heck my dad's Phenom 8450 runs HT3.0 and its a Barcelona die. The real problem is lack of HT3.x support from Broadcom or nVidia on their server chipsets or their customers not using that capability. Of course there is nothing stopping people from using 740, 780 or 790 series AMD chipsets on server MBs. They all work with HT3.x as many current systems attest to that fact. So its a failure of server MB manufacturers and/or their customers not wanting to go away from HT1.0 rather than Shanghai not being able to work with HT3.x. That is their choice since AMD and HT likes to grandfather old standards.

Perhaps server makers are waiting for socket G34 before changing to HT3.1. Those will have 3 channels of DDR3 and 4 16/16 HT3.1 links allowing for one hop 8S MBs with up to 8 7xx and 8xx series AMD NBs or HTX3 slots. 2S MBs could have a 32/32 cHT3.1 link between the 2 Shanghais with up to 4 7xx and 8xx series AMD NBs or HTX3 slots.
