IMO the polls reflected the financial crisis and identified McCain with the bailout, not the debate.

Perhaps...however even bigger than the "media", mccain stubbed his own toes with dumb poorly timed statements and histrionics
like the suspension of his campaign, only to come to DC and have the bill fail from under him. It was after all of the "media" picked up on this, including the WSJ and even the weekly standard wrote editorial that said mccain mis-handled the crisis.
