You constantly forget the real issues:
1. The $3Trillion war
amazon.com
2. The serious erosion of our civil liberties
3. The decimated economy and stock market
4. Serious levels of rising unemployment
5. A massive housing crisis that is getting worse
6 Health care

With only the letter to go on, and assuming that it's genuine, it would seem like the Obama campaign has a very good case. From what the letter says, the claims in the ad are factually incorrect, and there is no reason to believe that the people who are making the claims don't know that.

I don't know how to defend the idea that a political campaign should have no accountability for the claims they make.

I see your point about being able to have an open debate about the issues. But I don't see how openly lying has to be a part of that. I'm not sure what the best method for preventing outright falsehoods to enter the debate might be.
