"It must be comforting to convince yourself that Al Qaeda is only a few nutters in a cave."

Exactly so why set up a permanent camp in Iraq

There's an old saying: you are entitled to your own opinion, not your own facts.

Al Qaeda wasn't & isn't just "a few" anything. Over 80,000 men trained in AQ camps before 20001. In Iraq, they declared Iraq "the central front in global jihad" and poured men and resources into the country. Over 1000 foreign suicide bombers. The officer corps of the insurgency. The insurgency declared themselves "Al Qaeda in Iraq." These are facts. That's why we had so much trouble. We didn't anticipate Al Qaeda linking up with the remnants of the Baathists.

To claim the problem remains localized in Afghanistan and Pakistan is to deny reality. You don't have the right to ignore everything Al Qaeda says and does and then make proclamations about them. In short, you don't have a right to your own facts.

The happy conclusion is, AQ decided on a high stakes contest in Iraq and lost definitively.
