Let me rephrase because I was very unclear and imprecise.

I meant that historically one has been paid in NOMINAL terms AT THESE VALUATIONS on a 10 year rolling basis.

Better yet: one has been paid 8 years after a generational top.

1974, 1938, etc.

Also, you can't exclude dividends.

At current valuations I suspect one will make the historical long run average from equity markets.

I think I am correct in saying that several dow stocks in 1929 went out of business and were replaced by other stocks and this is not taken into consideration in this kind of analysis. So the numbers are a lot worse.
