Actually this still seems to be less intense, certainly less vitriolic, than the 2004 election.

This might be because McCain, of himself, raises fewer hackles (or revolts fewer opponents) than Bush in 2004. I can't imagine Kerry rousing genuinely strong feelings either way.
Also, the smears so far are less unpleasant - or so irrelevant they're not even recognised as smears?

Or maybe it's just an SI thing, and by now everyone with strong feelings either way is banished from/no longer reads the other side's boards? <vbg>
