No one outside the McCain campaign and the red base is really very interested in the whole schtick, from what I can see.

I'm finding the phenomenon interesting. I'm trying to figure out if people really believe it's all that important or whether it's mostly just a tactic.

I remember back to the post 9/11 period where the militant right was intensely particular not to tolerate the slightest bit of sympathy for Arabs, Muslims, pacifists, etc., where failure to loudly repudiate was interpreted as effectively consorting with the enemy. This Ayers thing has brought some of that out again. I questioned one display of it on this thread but never achieved any insight into it other than to determine that it's a strong belief. I don't know whether there's some gene that I'm lacking but I didn't get it then and I don't get it now.
