I am of the belief that it's stupid to make enemies when you can avoid doing so. Refusing to associate with someone on principle makes an enemy.

Completely agree. Isn't this related in a way to the question of meeting with our enemies? Why take some high road that cuts off the opportunity of achieving something? Sometimes you have to work with undesirable people or conditions to achieve goals. If the association isn't requiring you to commit acts that violate your personal morals, then perhaps the common goal requires holding your nose.

I served on a Relief Association Board with a woman I absolutely despised and who despised me. She was NASTY. But our goal was the same- to provide emergency services to the poor. So we sat there together to get it done. NOthing would have been served by my walking out.

So does that make us pragmatic--
or do we just have poor characters?
