I see no downside....The issue here is the imposition of a "trust" on people who do not desire it. Trust is an important value in our society. I hate to see any of them cheapened. There are all sorts of things we honor even for people we don't like because they support civility, in general. They are all burdens, albeit small ones, and in any case are a small price to pay for a classier world, IMO. And it's awfully entertaining to see some of the snarky PM's too- so from that perspective I have to say there's a huge bonus in entertainment value to be had posting such PM's. I've seen it all over SI- from all sides, and I support it. Jerry Springer has lots of fans, too. I don't think we are better off for it.
