I respect both your and Syb's opinions on things, and usually find myself going, that makes sense! when I read each of your posts.

Here's my take. There are no absolute rules other than TOU.

Thus, the posting of PMs is a personal decision. My disapproval of it stems from my own belief that something written privately should remain so, BUT if, as Syb notes, the PM was unsolicited or not friendly, that expectation of privacy is moot. I still wouldn't repost it, though I would no hesitation to paraphrase it if there were some compelling reason to do so.

One of my caveats to the boys was to never ever put anything in print that they wouldn't want read over the intercom at school. It's a good guide.

WHether it does or doesn't achieve all the other societal goals each of you mention doesn't factor into my personal decision, which stems from my own ethical beliefs about what is right or kind or just.
But I love the discussion.

Absolutely it's a deterrent. Some people don't want others to see what they're like in private. It wouldn't deter everyone, but it would deter some. I mean the whole reason they send it privately is because it's private- if it's going to be aired, a certain number of people will desist, because it is the very privateness of the function that appeals to some. Right?
